Washington Post shutters book section after one-third of staff laid off this morning

The cuts were ordered by owner Jeff Bezos and affect every department of the Washington Post. The newspaper is closing the sports desk and books section; the international desk, among other areas, will also shrink. NPR reports that the Post “appears poised to become primarily a federal paper, seeking to appeal almost exclusively for readers interested in issues about the US government, with an emphasis on national security and American politics.” Learn more.
