Book sales update: July 6, 2022

It’s a good time to be writing comics and graphic novels. Sales in the category increased 62 percent in 2021 in the US and Canada. Graphic novel sales were driven in particular by manga as well as by sales through bookstores and book fairs, but sales through comics stores were up as well (representing a rebound for that market).

Graph titled North American Comic (Combined Print & Digital Download) Sales Across Time. Between 2012 and 2020, sales were on a mostly uninterrupted slight upward trajectory from $805 million to $1.28 billion. Then in 2021, sales shot to $2.075 billion.
