Are you a nonfiction author looking to amplify the impact of your work and engage your audience on a deeper level? Discover the untapped potential of adult workbooks to complement your books, expand your impact, and get your ideas into the world.
People buy workbooks for all kinds of reasons, including self-improvement, skill-building, or exploring for fun. If you have written or are planning a nonfiction book, consider creating a workbook to strengthen your connections with readers.
A well-crafted workbook brings value for both you and your readers.
- For authors, a workbook generates its own royalties while potentially increasing sales of your other books. It gives you an additional product to sell based on your existing intellectual property and expertise. You might use a workbook to boost group sales, anchor workshops, and sweeten speaking opportunities. You may even reach new readers attracted to the workbook format.
- For readers, a workbook is a guide to internalizing topics otherwise buried in books. Compared to passively reading, people are more likely to remember and implement ideas they have tackled on paper. And, a workbook gives readers a low-risk, low-cost bridge between reading your book and signing up for a class, workshop, or consulting.
You might use a workbook to breathe new life into an established book’s sales and create the foundation of a series. Perhaps you’ll even decide that your next book will start in this interactive format.
If you’re curious about whether a workbook would work for your topic or expertise, join this course. We’ll look at ways to design and structure workbooks to fit a variety of business models and content areas. We’ll look into the psychology of workbooks: why do adults buy them, and will they write in them once they own them? And the session ends with the nitty-gritty questions of design, production, and formats.
In 75 minutes, we’ll cover everything from figuring out how the workbook fits with your other offerings to the nuts and bolts of production and formats, including:
- The most common mistakes people make when creating a workbook from an existing book
- How to use a workbook to support your books and/or teaching, speaking, or consulting
- Multiple styles of interactive questions, including a few you may not have considered
- Print production decisions like page size, paper stock, design, and more
- Deciding on the right format: print, ebook, or interactive PDF, and how each can serve your goals
You’ll receive a planning guide that you can use when creating your own workbook, describing the essential decisions and illustrating types of interactive content.
Who should take this class
- Nonfiction authors who hope to motivate action or behavior change with their books. Workbooks work particularly well for prescriptive (how-to) nonfiction and big idea books.
- Both self-published and traditionally published authors eager to explore new avenues for their intellectual property. (Do check your publishing contract for any necessary permissions.)
- Anyone looking to supplement books, online courses, or workshops with interactive materials
This class is not suited for
- Writers focused on children’s workbooks
- Writers of academic workbooks
- Fiction writers (we’ll focus on nonfiction topics)
- Those seeking technical instructions on formatting and layout tools
- Anyone looking to create workbooks based on works they do not have the rights for—we won’t cover legal aspects in this session
