Free Business Classes for Writers

Every month, Jane offers a free session on the business of writing or publishing. These take a few forms:

  • Jane or a guest expert presents on a focused topic. These are informally called Business Sermons. These sessions launched in 2020 and were commonly held on Sunday afternoons, but now they take place any time.
  • Jane helps a writer with a business conundrum. These are called Business Clinics. Jane helps writers determine next steps based on their goals and experience, complemented by her insight into current market conditions. Anyone can apply and be considered for Clinic. It’s free.
  • Jane hosts industry discussions: Jane sometimes hosts conversations with authors or colleagues on both timely topics and evergreen challenges.

Craft & Process Tips for ADHD Writers with Sarah Chauncey

April 10: Craft and Process Tips for ADHD Writers with Sarah K. Chauncey

Although many writers with ADHD develop vivid, unforgettable voices, nearly all initially struggle with how to effectively organize and communicate their stories. The same traits that give rise to creative insights, like nonlinear thinking and hyperfocus, can also derail structure and storytelling. The ADHD brain, too, can circle in loops, leading to endless revisions without ever reaching the finish line. This is a neuro-affirming session on how to write better when your brain rebels against linear structure.

Freelance editor and writing coach Sarah K. Chauncey (AuDHD) will explore the patterns most common to ADHD writers: stories that meander, too much context, paragraphs that leap instead of build, infondumps, and epic-length manuscripts. She’ll also offer process strategies that support consistency without crushing creativity.

Networking Skills for Writers with Linda Ruggeri

May 8: Networking Skills for Writers with Linda Ruggeri

Networking is a core business skill for writers—one that can be learned and shaped over time, rather than something you’re born good at or not. Networking is simply building authentic professional relationships that support opportunities, stability, and better decision-making. In this session, professional freelance editor Linda Ruggeri shares practical, concrete strategies writers can use right away for professional networking—and why she wrote Networking for Freelance Editors. Her approach is human, values-driven, non-transactional, and genuinely useful, especially for writers who are newer to thinking about the business side of their work.
